Jimmy Cazin Consultant for Youth Ministries and Contemporary Worship
I am excited that one of the MAIN things that I've been asked to do is to work with the youth ministry here at FPC. I have years of experience working with Presbyterian youth groups and organizing retreats for the Presbytery of Tampa Bay. The foundation of my training came through Young Life, which emphasizes "relational ministry". I believe that you have to earn the right to be heard, and so in order to be effective in reaching teenagers and helping them grow in their faith, we have to build solid, authentic relationships so that we can earn that right to be heard. It's really true that students don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care. One other bedrock truth I learned from the Presbyterian elder who started Young Life in the 50's is that "it is a sin to bore a kid with the Gospel". How about that? Youth ministry (any ministry) should never be boring! The message of Jesus is the greatest news any of us will ever hear, so my promise is that you will never be bored. My hope is to build a team of adults (adults of ALL ages, including young adults who were former FPC youth themselves). My plan will be to not only create an appealing, engaging, fun youth group experience on Sunday evening, but also to equip adults to work with teenagers at FPC. If you are interested in working with the youth group and on this team, drop me an email at email@example.com. My promise to you is that as an adult leader, you'll probably get WAY more out of this than you expect, and you'll grow in your faith as you lead these students. Its a win-win. Also, I wanted to let you know of a few things that are already on my mind. I would LOVE to put together a youth band, so if you play or sing, let me know. We are going to get those loud speakers and amplifiers in your youth room warmed up and cranked up, so get ready to have some fun musically. Mark your calendar for Sunday, March 1st after church. I will buy lunch for any student or parent that wants to come help reorganize the youth rooms! Finally, I do enjoy playing outdoors, so I am hoping we can organize some Ultimate Frisbee soon. It's the greatest game for students, plus you burn calories and make new friends. Win, win, and another win. I have also gotten permission for us to take a BEACH TRIP to Ormond Beach on Sunday, March 22nd after church. More info to come, but just a day trip to the beach to hang out, enjoy the surf, throw the frisbee, and maybe sing some songs on the beach at sunset! I am looking forward to meeting each one of you!
